Caves & Capers

I started playing a stripped down version of D&D with my kids in 2019. It always made me chuckle hearing the things they would say or interact with during our sessions so I started to record them. I’m going to be honest with you, the intent of this podcast is to have a space to collect all the silly clips we’ve recorded so that I can easily share with friends and family. It’s not really a “traditional” D&D podcast. I may upload raw sessions (with a few things edited out) in the future but for now it’ll just be the clips I find most entertaining. Some of the recordings may seem out of context (and tbh a lot of the earlier ones are) but I try to provide some context in the descriptions. Players: Dad - DM and Gum. Gum is a lizardman fighter and traveling companion of Thorn and Slimer. Elika - Thorn. Thorn is a dwarf bard who plays the drum. Some of his spells include Sleepy Beat and Thunder Crunch. He recently got the Ring of Spider-climbing and uses it every chance he gets. Riley - Slimer. A literal ball of slime. He stores everything he owns inside his slime body including the sword he fights with. His signature move is to throw balls of slime at his enemies’ eyes. If you enjoy the content cool, if it’s not for you that’s cool too. Thanks for checking it out.

Yo! It has been awhile. Illness and scheduling conflicts have wrecked havoc on us but we are happy to be back! Thorn, Gum, and Slimer find themselves locked in jail with a surprise guest, Bramble! Bramble is played by our children’s librarian, Amber.
I realized we didn’t get to touch on Bramble’s backstory too much so I’ll let you read what I sent Amber prior to us playing:
“Spoonville is a humble little village that few travelers know about. The spoons of Spoonville are hard working folk but always quick to share a laugh with anyone who will listen. They are good natured at heart and welcome all to their village. They especially like sharing their “world famous” soups to outsiders.

But that’s not why Bramble is here. She’s not here for the soups or the limericks, she’s here to steal a golden ladle. You see, the Spoons of Spoonville are not a particularly wealthy folk. It took a lot of trading and bartering and hard work to obtain enough gold to forge a very special ladle. This golden ladle is the pièce de résistance to the statue honoring Mayor Cuchara. The mayor was the founding member of Spoonville and recently passed away from old age.

Bramble came to Spoonville under the cover of night. She climbed the massive statue in the center of town and easily swiped the ladle out of Mayor Cuchara’s grasp. What she did not expect was to be roped into a lovely conversation with one of the denizens. Bramble let her guard slip and decided to join them for a bowl of soup at the tavern. During the festivities, and a particularly quiet part of a song the ladle slipped from her pouch and hit the wooden floor with a thundering *THUNK!*

The spoons of Spoonville were shocked. They’ve never experienced this type of betrayal before. They were very upset and wanted Bramble to atone for this act. So they collectively agreed that Bramble will help make soups and tend to crops for 2 weeks. Bramble will also spend her nights locked up so she wont scurry off in the middle of the night.

Why does Spoonville have a jail if they are such a peaceful town? I can tell you it’s NOT because the DM didn’t think this scenario through but because Spoonville was built on top of an old dungeon. And while the spoons covered up that particular eyesore they made an exception for their recent guest.

On the seventh night of her stay Bramble heard a bunch of ruckus coming from beyond her walls. She patiently waited as the noise grew louder and louder until the door burst open. There were four forcs. Two were carrying unconscious bodies. A dwarf and a lizard person. The other two were viciously fighting some sort of slime creature.

The fight eventually ended and all three were thrown into a cell beside her. Better let them get their rest. They’ll need it.”

Welcome to Spoonville

This isn’t Elika’s first time DMing but it’s definitely her most cohesive story to date!
The party is attempting to explore a volcano but first they just have to get in the front door…
*For those keeping up with whatever the it is we are doing, none of this is canon. The party will be back in pursuit of the giant gelatinous cube after Elika’s arc.

Caves & Capers Theme

Saturday Dec 31, 2022

Saturday Dec 31, 2022

I cannot thank my good friend, Brayton, enough for helping us out with this. He did practically everything (he even gave the kids a little drum lesson). He’s got an amazing dnd podcast called Bardic Mystery Tour that you should absolutely check out. It’s about a group of bards that go from town to town trying to play a show and they always end up in some sort of mystery shenanigans. They even record their own spell songs. https://bardicmysterytour.podbean.com

The Bone Cave Pt.2

Saturday Dec 31, 2022

Saturday Dec 31, 2022

Hey folks! Sorry for the long pause, blame it on the holidays, or illness, or maybe we were working on a totally rad theme song and I had the perfect cold opener to introduce it…

Thorn, Gum, and Slimer are still messing around in the Giant’s Grott. Slimer has just discovered his love for a great axe as the part was swarmed by several large skeleton beasts. Will they make it out alive? (Probably)

This episode ended up being longer than our others. We had some combat and I left in some rambling child bits. Lol! I hope you enjoy it.
